Fresh Food Transportation
Thirty percent of the food produced globally is wasted, further complicated by the increasing global distribution of perishable food. The global annual volume of perishable food using reefers for transportation will reach 3 billion tons by 2020 and technological solutions are sought to better preserve produce within the value chain. Somnio Global’s Plasma Scrub technology extends the shelf life of fresh food by eliminating bacteria inside the storage environment while controlling the ripening of produce through ethylene scrubbing. Plasma Scrub is an easy to use, chemical-free, rugged, and energy efficient system that is able to extend the shelf life of food in reefer containers as well as in cold storages.

Fresh Food Storage
The United Nations estimates that more than a third of the food produced globally each year (U.S. $1 trillion) is wasted because perishable food is improperly stored. Approximately five percent of global food waste is due to spoilage during storage, a U.S. $50 billion annual problem. Somnio Global’s Plasma Scrub cold storage innovation increases shelf life in cold storage facilities by reducing bacteria levels and controlling ethylene production. Plasma Scrub is a low-cost, low-maintenance and safe means of disinfecting cold storage. It has no harmful byproducts or residue.

Water Treatment
At this time, over 1.1 Billion people are without access to safe drinking water while millions die each year from conditions related to water scarcity. Traditional water treatment systems and infrastructure, where they exist, are struggling to cope with increasingly complex industrial and pharmaceutical contamination, driving the need for new technological solutions. Somnio’s Free Radical Generation technology provides a new technology platform for water treatment across many applications.

Bio-preservation
The lack of developed cold chains deprives many areas of the world from lifesaving medicines such as insulin. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates 1.5 million children under the age of five die from vaccine-preventable diseases. Upkara’s breakthrough technology is able to preserve various drugs, vaccines and antibodies at ambient temperatures, eliminating the need for refrigeration or controlled temperature storage systems. Preserving medicines without refrigeration will save lives by increasing access to these drugs for a large portion of the world’s population. We estimate the value of these markets to be U.S. $225 billion by 2020.

Solid State Energy Storage
Battery technologies have problems: fire hazards with overheating, short-circuiting, non-conformal shapes and cost. These problems drive the need for better performing, lower weight, cost effective batteries for electric vehicles, smart phones and consumer electronics. Somnio Global has a scalable technology capable of manufacturing high-capacity, conformal, solid state batteries economically. The battery market for consumer vehicles is valued at U.S. $3.5 billion. The portable battery market for smartphones, tablets and laptops could reach U.S. $10.5 billion by 2020. Somnio Global’s cutting-edge technology has the potential to significantly disrupt current markets as a lower cost and better performing alternative to any option.

Medical Sanitation
Drug-resistant bacteria annually infect more than 2 million people, and cause the deaths of more than 23,000 people every year in the U.S. alone, according to the U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The total cost to the global economy could reach U.S. $100 trillion by 2050 and kill more than 10 million people each year. Bluemist™, developed by Somnio Global, is a highly effective, water based fog that rapidly and effectively sanitizes medical rooms and facilities. Bluemist™ is more effective and less costly than competing technologies, and can treat a standard-size hospital room in less than one hour.

Advanced Additive Manufacturing
Strict emissions and fuel economy standards compel automobile manufacturers to reduce vehicle weight. Components such as the cast iron brake rotor are difficult to lighten. No cost effective coatings or durable materials can match the performance of the cast iron rotor. Somnio Global has developed technology to coat the surface of a lightweight aluminum rotor with, wear-resistant material that exceeds the braking performance of cast iron. The target markets for this technology are the passenger and light commercial vehicle segments where production exceeds 60 million units per annum globally. The total global market potential is U.S. $7.5 billion. Benefits also include lower fuel consumption and emissions.

Polymer Recycling
Each year, global production of expanded polystyrene (EPS) exceeds 15 million tons, 90 percent of which goes to landfills. Waste EPS has little recycling potential so it has no redeemable value. Somnio Global has developed the patented Styroclean® technology, using a low-cost, scalable reactor to recover styrene monomer from polystyrene waste, thus making polystyrene recyclable. The global EPS industry exceeds U.S. $13 billion in annual production, with production in the United States alone exceeding U.S. $2.5 billion. By making polystyrene fully recyclable, Styroclean® can protect the polystyrene industry and ensure its future growth while contributing to the reduction of global polystyrene pollution.

ContactMat
Contactmat is a breakthrough proprietary process for manufacturing high-efficiency electrical contacts and packaging material, developed with the aim of substantially lowering the cost to manufacture. Contactmat electrical contacts provide a low cost, high quality, longer-lasting alternative to current products and with the global switchgear market growing at a 5 percent annual rate, there exists a significant opportunity for cost savings, value creation and increased profits in this industry.
